Kailash Manasarovar Yatra Overland Trip from kathmandu

The Sacred History of Mount Kailash
As long as there have been ancient religions in Asia, there has been a reverence for Mount Kailash. The cosmologies and origin myths of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism each speak of Kailash as the axis mundi - the center and birthplace of the entire world. Kailash is spoken of as the mythical Mt Meru in the Vedas. The mountain was indeed legendary even before the great Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, were written.

Hindus believe Mount Kailash to be the home of Lord Shiva. According to Sanskrit literature, the immortal Shiva lives atop Kailash where he spends his time practicing yogic austerities with his divine consort, Parvati. For a Hindu, to make the Yatra to Kailash and have the darshan (divine view) of Shiva's home is to attain release from the clutches of ignorance and delusion.

Tibetan Buddhists call the mountain Kang Rimpoche, the 'Precious One of Glacial Snow.' To Jains, Kailash is known as Astapada, the place where Rishaba (the first of the twenty-four Tirthankaras) attained liberation. And for followers of Bon, Tibet's pre-Buddhist, shamanistic religion, Kailash is Mount Tise - the site of a 12th century battle between the Buddhist sage Milarepa and the Bon shaman Naro Bon-chung.

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar : Yatra & Parikrama
Considered the most important sacred site of four religions and 2 billion people, Mount Kailash is a breathtaking fusion of rock and ice soaring to over 22,000 feet in the farthest reaches of western Tibet. This venerated holy place also holds the unique distinction of being one of the least traveled, with no more than a few thousand yatri (pilgrims) visiting each year because of the weeks-long, awe-inspiring journey it takes to reach the mountain.

Eco Trek allows yatri from all over the world the opportunity to hike and experience the 52km parikrama (circumambulation) around the sacred Kailash. With the help of our friendly and knowledgeable staff, pilgrims can undertake this epic, once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar Yatra : Overview
Over an unforgettable 18 days, all yatri will take in the great countryside of far western Tibet and numerous holy monasteries before reaching the base of Mount Kailash and beginning the circumambulation. (For those clients who feel that hiking the entire route might be too difficult, yaks and horses can be hired for an additional cost to assist you on your kora.)

Before their pilgrimage, yatri will be led to the nearby holy waters of Lake Manasovar, known as the Lake of Consciousness and Enlightenment, where they will have the opportunity to take a sacred bath and perform puja on the banks. Eco Trek staff will also set up a bathing tent and heat the chilling water of Manasovar for clients who prefer a private experience.

Custom Tours
Eco Trek offers the opportunity for clients to design and create a custom trip with us to the Mt Kailash region. There are various ways to access the Kailash region. There are many holy sites only a couple days drive away. Often spiritual communities or academic institutions many want a very specific and detailed trip. Others might want to take the highest end option of a helicopter flight to Kailash region. There is also a 5 day trek from the Nepali town of Simikot to the Tibetan border just south of Lake Manasovar. Eco Trek truly wants you to enjoy the beauty of your pilgrimage to this Holy place.

Upper Mustang Trekking

A vast expanse of rock; wilderness of huge proportions, Mustang opened only for selected organized groups since 1992. Mustang offers a truly exceptional opportunity to explore an area rich in ancient tradition and mythology. An almost treeless, barren landscape with a countryside similar to Tibetan plateau. In lower Mustang the hills tend to be great, red fluted cliffs, while upper Mustang offers an endless expanse of yellow and gray rolling hills, eroded the wind, which is prevalent in this area. The people here are Tibetan in origin and their way of life and spoken language reflect this ancestral lineage. The trek takes you to the walled town of Lo-Manthang, a visually extraordinary place, home of the present Mustang's King and full of beautiful temples and Gompa.
Your trip preparation:
This trek is considered as a non-technical trek and suitable for average people. If you are moderately fit and have a sense of adventure and culture you will enjoy this trek. The program is designed to acclimatize you gradually and not to experience high altitude sickness.

Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS)

With the distinction of Nepal as a trekking destination and its growing charm, a provision of Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) has been implemented to control illegal trekking operations and ensure safety and security of the trekkers in general trekking areas through the mechanism of Prompt Information Service as and when required .
The past experiences have shown that difficulties have been faced while carrying out rescue operations promptly during the times of accidents and natural calamities. Because of lack of proper record system of trekkers, their exact whereabouts and the information about trekking routes, rescue and search missions used to face difficulties in spotting the trekkers missing.
The provision of Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) has come into force from Jan 01, 2008. Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) have started recording trekkers detail and issuing TIMS Card to trekkers.
Where & how to obtain TIMS Card ?

Why is TIMS Necessary?

The following considerations have been taken into account in the process of issuing TIMS:

  • All important details of trekkers and trekking routes shall be maintained on a computerized Database Management System that may be useful for safety and security of trekkers. To help carry out search and rescue operations for trekkers in case of natural calamities and other accidents by means of Authentic Information Service . To maintain a record system that includes personal details of trekkers, trekking area, trekking routes, handling agencies, duration, etc. The data generated from the system will be useful to all stakeholders:- tourism organizations, Government agencies, diplomatic missions, tour operators, research institute, etc.
  • Unauthorized trekking operations will be controlled, thus, resulting into better management of trekking service and in benefit of all concerned :- trekkers, agencies, field staff, Government, etc. and also occasional untoward incidents will be better prevented.

Thailand Tourist Attraction

Bangkok’s chief attraction includes the stunning Wat Phra Kaeo (also known as the Emerald Buddha Chapel) and Grand Palace complex, the Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), Vimanmek Palace, the world’s biggest golden teak building and the Pasteur Institute Snake’s Farm where some of the most deadly snakes are “milked” to make invaluable serum. The Suan Pakkand Palace houses a lacquer pavilion which is festooned with medieval gold leaf murals a must see for travelers to the area. Thailand has made an amazing recovery since the 2004 tsunami. However those wishing to travel to the ravaged areas should check with the tour operators or the embassy for the latest information.

Over the last decade, Bangkok saw a remarkable transformation, from being primarily a backpacker precinct to its transformation as one of Asia’s most popular tourist spots. From its bustling capital, Bangkok, to the epic ashen sands of some of the most stunning beaches in the world, Thailand caters to a diverse array of tastes. Bangkok is to Thailand what London is to England: the center of economic and political affairs, the metropolis, and the hub of business. The rapid pace of development and increasing prosperity has dragged along with it the inevitable evils, difficult to navigate traffic congestion and pollution levels. The opening of a slick overland metropolitan railway allows commuters to glide above the chaos below, coupled with the reasonably priced air conditioned taxis and river boats the situation has eased a bit. The Chao Phraya River slices through the city. On its banks are some of the best hotels in the city. You’ll also find the Grand Palace and the Wat Phra Kaeo, a stunning temple complex which houses the Emerald Buddha. The statue is not covered in emerald as many think; it’s actually cut out of translucent jade.

5.jpg

Upriver from the Grand Palace are the Royal Barges. These richly decked barges are still used for special processions on the river. Within the city limits there is an affluence of around 300 Buddhist temples and shrines. The famed amongst them are Wat Arun (Temple of Arun), Wat Bechamabophit (Marble Temple) and the Wat Trimit (Temple of the Golden Buddha). Wat Pho is one of the largest temples in Thailand and probably the world. The complex comprises of about 30 individual temples, the most prominent amongst them is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha with it’s massive figurine measuring 47.5 m ( 156 ft) and 15m ( 49 ft). The gardens surrounding the temple complex are a nice escape from the frenzied pace of the city. The Floating Market makes for an interesting visit, though it has become more of a tourist attraction rather than a genuine market. Other interesting spots include Lak Muang (the city stone), the National Museum and the Erawan Shrine where the locals make their daily offerings. Also, the Suan Pakkard Palace houses a collection of precious antiques.

32.jpg

The house of Jim Thomson, the American silk dealer who vanished without a trace also makes for an interesting visit. The house has since then been renovated into a craft museum where you can get some fine quality silks at reasonable prices. Bangkok is famed for its thriving nightlife which makes for a major tourist attraction. The omnipresent ‘girlie bars’ in Patpong area are notorious, though stricter laws have clamped them down, rendering them more tourist friendly. Beyond these seedy dens are the chic nightclubs and designer bars. Upriver from Bangkok is the former capital of Ayutthaya and the summer palace at Bang Pa-In. Within its confines lie the classic Thai pavilion, a strange Buddhist temple that resembles a Gothic church, a Chinese styled pagoda and a neoclassical palace. East of Bangkok lies The Ancient City, it’s basically a large expanse of private park replete with models of Thailand’s most historic monuments and temple ruins from the Khmer Empire. Just outside the city is Rose Garden Country Resort where there are daily performances of Thai music, ceremonies, games and dance. Far north is Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city and a famed excursion spot due to its ancient and beautiful temples, teak forests, caves and waterfalls. Some of the cities more popular attractions include the Doi Suthep temple and trekking with elephants.

21.jpg

Doi Suthep, perched atop a hill, is one of the more famous temples in all of Thailand; it offers some stunning views of the city on a clear day. The trip can be made either via a funicular or a 400 stepped grand staircase. The banisters themselves are almost enough to make travel to this area worth your time. A large green and red serpent like figure winds its way down to end in the shape of a dragon’s head. Trekking with elephants in the nearby countryside is a major tourist draw. However, consider that some of these so called “authentic” trips are anything but that. There are numerous villages in the outskirts of the city where they manufacture local handicrafts. There is also an elephant training school in the Mae Sa Valley coupled with a stunning orchard. An interesting road to take is the one to Mae-Hong—Son near the border Myanmar. It’s a great base from which to go trekking and motorcycle touring. On the way to Mae-Hong-Son loop, do stop at the quaint town of Pai, a warm and relaxed place.

42.jpg

The province of Kanchanaburi is a spectacular oasis of sweeping waterways and greenery-clad hills. On the other hand, the town has some slick hotels and tourist facilities. It’s the original site of the famed Bridge over the River Kwai, a spot where thousands of allied prisoners of war and Thai forced laborers were massacred by the Japanese. The train trip, whether on the dedicated tourist service or the normal service runs along the ‘Death Railway’ and across the post-war bridge. Phuket was one of the regions hit by the tsunami; however the clean up process has been excellent. Phuket is fast on its way on outstripping Pattaya as the number one resort in Thailand.

Quebec City Best place of holiday

Quebec_city

Besides "crazy" I’ve been called lots of things for willingly leaving my job and traveling around the world for a year with my wife and two young boys. Adventurous, courageous, brave—even fortunate—were other adjectives used that I personally think better describe the situation. I prefer being labeled as an "explorer," "adventure seeker," or just plain old "world traveler" myself. The word "tourist" had never even entered the vocabulary. Well that’s exactly what we were transformed into the moment we arrived in Quebec City, staring blankly at a road atlas and asking directions in English in a French-speaking town.

Carol and I had been to Quebec City’s old town several years earlier for Winter Carnival, where the city becomes a sort of North Pole for revelers, complete with snow sculptures, ice climbing walls, dogsled rides, plenty of alcohol to warm the spirits, and a snow bath where the participants are dressed only in bathing suits. I did mention it was winter and there was alcohol involved, right? Well, needless to say, Carol and I didn’t pack the proper clothing for this event, so I think, like us, very few tourists took part. This time, we arrive in 80-degree temperatures, but still with plenty of people crowding the walled city for fun and amusement. It turns out 2008 marks Quebec’s 400th birthday, and much to our good fortune, this was the week the province celebrated with Festival d’Ete de Quebec—a music festival that culminated the weekend we arrived.

In hindsight, we seemed pretty lucky to get a B&B right smack in the middle of town and for only $100 a night to boot. That’s the payoff for having planned this itinerary well in advance! Room number six at the Hotel La Maison Demers fit all four of us, no problem, with two queen beds, although it gave us our first true taste of quality family time. No privacy in this joint! But no need to be indoors when there was so much going on.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the nicest weekend of weather in Quebec City all year. The warm temperatures and brilliant sunshine seemed to bring everyone out, locals and out-of-towners alike. For this reason, it didn’t feel so bad being a tourist; it was actually kind of fun. In fact, I think even the locals completely enjoyed the numerous street performers that entertained large crowds throughout the city both day and night. In our hometown of New York, we never would have considered stopping to watch break dancers doing their thing for money outside Central Park or paid much attention to the street musicians playing tunes to the city’s plethora of foreign visitors. Here, however, we actually sought them out, especially the kids, who particularly loved the moving human statues. Even the restaurants were filled with mostly French-speaking clientele, a signal that most people were probably from the area, coming to the city just for the day or long weekend.

For the ultimate tourist experience, we even took in a tour of La Citadelle de Quebec, a fortified military installation that’s still active today and hovers just outside the shadows of the famous Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. We did this for a chance to watch the changing of the guards, a formal ceremony performed daily at 10 a.m. that honors the province’s British military tradition. Since 1920 it has housed the Royal 22e RĂ©giment, the only infantry unit of the regular forces to use French as its working language, and they take their heritage seriously. Although I don’t think there’s any serious threat of invasion—there's never been a battle fought here.

As we leave the province of Quebec and drive back towards the U.S., we’ve gotten the first taste of being outside the country (thanks mainly to the French language) and savored the notion of actually having fun being a tourist for a short time.

Beatiful Tourist destination

Most tourists that come to Peru go through a well-defined circuit. I was right with the herd the first time I visited, so this time I wanted to spend more time in the Sacred Valley, the beautiful region between Cusco and Machu Picchu that most people just breeze through on a one-day tour. (Or they take the train through it and don’t even stop.)

This is a fantastic region though, a string of towns and trails that in lesser countries would be the main draw. You’ve got stunning scenery, impressive Inca ruins, women decked out in their embroidered cacophony of colors, sprawling markets, and a calendar of festivals that could keep you partying for weeks.

There are a few greatest hits attractions that are on all the tour bus stops, such as Pisac and Chinchero on market days. There are other spots, however, where you will only find intrepid backpackers who aren’t in a hurry. Head into the mountains and you’ll see more animals than people.

After I met the alpaca above at 4,050 meters, I descended with a guide through a canyon and past this Pukamarka village, which was so picture-perfect it was hard to believe it was not part of a movie set. But not an electric wire in sight.

Past the village, on the other side of the pass, we went through a canyon where we saw an eagle and falcons were fighting in the air overhead. Then the trail came to a gate and an incredible Inca structure that almost nobody visits, Huchuy Qosqo. It is perched 3,350 meters above the town of Lamay and the thing is, we took the easy way to get there. If you take the most direct route, it’s a very steep and long hike up the side of the mountain, which will take you several hours and a probably a gallon of water. Amazingly, there’s still a hut up there manned by someone who collects admission ($7).

My guide was from Andean Experience, but if you put “Huchuy Qosqo” into a search you’ll find dozens of operators doing one-day hikes to the ruins by the route I took or incorporating this into longer group treks. You can do it on your own too in theory, but the trails aren’t marked and the locals speak Quechua, so you’d better find a good map.

There are sites like this all over the Sacred Valley, and villages where I longed to stop and stay for a week. Alas, there’s never enough time…
